Do you really need a rental car for a 10 day stay on Oahu, or is there sufficient public transportation?
We are going for about 10 days, probably staying in Waikiki. We would like to see the whole island – Pearl Harbor, North Shore, Kaneohe Bay, etc etc). Is there public transportation? And if so – does it cover most of the island? and if so – what are the rates?
Thanks for your help.
You definitely DO NOT need a rental car for every day if you’re staying in Waikiki. Nearly everything is within walking distance — the beach, the zoo, the aquarium, restaurants, bars, and shopping. You can take The Bus to Pearl Harbor and Ala Moana shopping center (or even a cab…still cheaper than a rental car for a day) and rent a car for a day or two so you can visit the North Shore, Wahiawa (Dole pineapple cannery), the pali, Diamond Head, etc. Parking at Waikiki Hotels is $10/day and up and the parking spaces tend to be REALLY small and hard to get in and out of. Renting a car for more than a couple of days is a waste of money, IMO. I live on an outer island and visit Oahu often. We never rent a car unless we plan to leave Honolulu/Waikiki.
