If you have a family and work in a big city, chances are your house is a rush hour away from work. There’s not much you can do to change this, unless you want to move or change jobs, so you have to find ways to deal with it.

One problem people have with a long commute time is that it cuts a lot out of your sleeping time. This can be a problem when you’re busy in the late evening wrestling kids into bed or getting things done around the house.

On those nights when you get a chance to go to bed early, however, you should jump on it. Unfortunately in this case, your body runs on a biological clock. It knows when you usually go to sleep, and it is going to get tired around that time, even if you crawl into bed earlier.

Falling asleep can also be difficult because light receptors in your eyes tell your brain when it is day and when it is night. If you live somewhere where the sun goes down later, this can be a problem. To solve this, try to stay indoors in a dimly lit room for a couple hours before you want to go to sleep. This will signal to your brain that it is time to get drowsy, and your body will increase the production of the natural hormone melatonin.

If this doesn’t work, there are melatonin supplements available over the counter at most drug stores. There have not been any studies done over a long period of time, and it is believed that melatonin might build up in the body if taken frequently. For this reason, melatonin should only be taken when needed. It is far less dangerous, however, than prescription sleeping pills and some herbs that can have scary side effects.

Once you’ve slept through the night, you may also find it difficult to wake up for your long commute, considering it may still be dark outside and you just want to sleep. In these circumstances, where it is still dark, having something to look forward to can work wonders.

If you know you’re going to have a particularly difficult time waking up in the morning, plan to have your favorite thing for breakfast or listen to your favorite band while you get ready. These kinds of things can provide incentive for you to get out of bed in the morning and get going so you can make it to work on time and ready to go.
