Preserving our RV investments by winterizing to avoid loss due to frozen pipes makes sense. Avoiding parking the motorhome where ice breaking the branches sounds reasonable; along with making sure our commute vehicles are ready for safe travel.
But if you think that our next move as members of the Maine Good Sam RV Club is to go into hibernation for the winter, you have a surprise in store.
But first, let us introduce ourselves. We are RV owners having a ‘rig’ anything from a pop-up camper to a full size motorcoach. We enjoy travel and many times we will travel as a group known as a local Good Sam ’Chapters’ that have roughly 10 to 25 families on average belonging to them.
Many of us became members of Good Sam Intl. to be able to take advantage of a unique roadside assistance program (similar to that auto club that has 3 letters!) that is geared for our units. Good Sam also arranges many discounts and serves as a consumer advocate when needed to. They real know the RV industry!
Within a given state that has local chapters chartered by Good Sam is a group of state officers, the highest ranking being the state director. It is his or her job to organize annual rallies called Samborees following the wishes brought forth by the directives of what the chapters agree on.
These Samborees are fun events, very family oriented, and without exception have activities that generate revenue for area charities.
You’ve got it right! The SAM in Good Sam stands for Samaritan!
We are in the northeast. And to be creative(?) ..we are known as Maine Good Sams.
One of the first signs you’ll see entering our state is ‘Maine…Life the way it should be!’
The Great Seal of the State of Maine was adopted in June 1820. There have been variations in the details of the seal, but the overall design and images remain true to the original. The center of the seal is a shield adorned with a tranquil scene of a moose resting in a field bordered by water and woods, pine tree stand tall directly behind the moose. On either side of the shield, a farmer rests on his scythe, and a sailor leans on an anchor. Above the shield is the motto “Dirigo” (I lead), and a stylized North Star.
In the Spirit of ‘Dirigo’, it is the hopes of the Maine Good Sam Club Chapters to lead folks to the best way to enjoy the RV life style, that is, to become a member of a local Good Sam Chapter. Many liken chapters to an extended family and when we gather at our Samboree RV rallies, it’s a lot like a big family reunion.
Unlike what you hear in the news media every day, life is NOT all gloom and doom! It is what you make of it! Maine Good Sam’rs prove this by exemplifying the Samaritan Spirit. The rewards of neighbor helping neighbor are rich.
Since the early 1960’s they have made sure others can enjoy living life while they do the same.
Each year chapters raise THOUSANDS of dollars for Maine charities, scholarships, and the needs of local families. In addition they engage in projects where the primary deposit is sweat equity! THEY are one of the biggest reasons the ‘Smiling guy with the Halo’ Smiles!
The brisk cold weather doesn’t send us into hibernation. It sends us into overdrive to recruit more RV owners into our fold and share what truly is an easy labor of love; to Enjoy living life and help make sure others can do the same.
