best commuting car
If I’m required to drive my own car to work every day can I deduct the commuting miles?

My husband’s work requires him to drive his own car to work every day and he’s not even supposed to carpool with anyone. This is all on the off-hand chance that they need him to go somewhere or move job sites. I know commuting miles aren’t normally deductible, unless you’re going to training seminar out of the area.

Dear Nat: Commuting mileage is never a deduction. If your husbands employer requires him to travel to different locations(after he gets to work) that mileage would qualify. Keep detailed records and ask your employer for a statement as to their reimbursement policy and file it as that will be the first two things the IRS will ask for in an audit. If your husbands employer reimburses him for travel you may not have a deduction based on how much they cover. See form 2106 instructions.
