Can anybody suggest a bicycle type or brand for purpose of commuting to work 2.5 miles?
im bicycling for 3 reasons, a) environmental b) exercise c) save gas money…
my office is in QUEENS NYC 2.5 miles from home base,
Is it feasible to bicycle in the winter months ???
Is riding in the snow too dangerous??
Also can anybody suggest any good bicycle brand, type etc to get for commuting purpose??
If it’s for commuting, I would get a light mountain bike with no (or maybe only front) suspension. It will be more comfortable on the road than a road bike and more durable in the winter.
I like the Cannondale bikes for that kind of stuff. They are light and easy to carry up stairs to apartments or into buildings if you don’t want to leave it outside in Queens. They are also a good quality.
Is it too dangerous to bike on snow? Absolutely not. People do it all the time. don’t get me wrong, it’s a whole different kind of riding, but you’ll get used to it. It’s a great workout too cuz you have to work a fair bit harder.
Get two sets of tires. One slick (smooth) pair of street tires for the summer and a knobbier, more aggressive pair for the winter. That will help a LOT.
Things you will want to consider:
Price (always an important factor)
Quality (you will get what you pay for. Unfortunately our budgets aren’t always limitless!)
Weight (carrying into buildings, up stairs etc. and of course the lighter bike will be easier to ride)
Service (find out if they will service your bike post-sale)
Go to a bike shop and talk to them too. They SHOULD be helpful. If they aren’t, don’t get discouraged, just go to a different shop! It’s your money, spend it wisely.
