bike commuting in the rain
Cycling: are disc brakes worth having on a bicycle?

I use my bike for commuting and leisure, rain or shine. If I buy a new bike with disc brakes, will it be worth the extra expense?

I had the same question when I purchased my mountain bike, but I think ultimately it’s up to you whether or not it’s worth it. What I can tell you as someone whom was in your shoes not but a year ago, is that with disc brakes, you’ll see an amazing improvement in braking when the wheels of your bike get wet. With my old bike, if I drove through a big puddle and then wanted to stop, my stopping distance would triple, occasionally scaring the crap out of me. So if your wheels get wet regularly, and you get tired of adjusting caliper type brakes because they’re always rubbing this, that and the other, then you might want to opt for the discs and pay the extra 100+ bucks. I’m glad I did.
