MBTA Commuter Line – Boston, MA?

I am planning on traveling to the Boston, MA area with my fiance in mid December. I am totally confused on how the MBTA transportation line works.

We are planning on staying in Rockport, MA and commuting to different cities daily to explore such as Salem & Boston. It says we can travel on the Commuter Rail to all of these places but I am not sure which tickets to buy??

I am confused between Interzone and Zone fares and which ones we should purchase?

It says Rockport is in Zone 8, Salem in Zone 3, and Boston (North Station) in Zone 1A

Can someone please help!!

Rockport is in Zone 8, Salem in Zone 3, 8 – 3 = 5 zones. Zone 5 interzone fare
Rockport is in Zone 8, Boston (North Station) in Zone 1A 8 zones, Zone 8 fare, NOT INTERZONE as All Commuter Rail Interzone fares and passes are NOT valid for travel to or from North Station, South Station, Back Bay Station and other Zone 1A stations. Your fare or pass depends on the number of zones through which you travel.

You can buy your ticket on board, just tell the conductor where you’re going. That may make it easier, though you will pay the on board surcharge ($1 off peak, $2 peak commute times).
