Living and Working in Washington DC?
I thought about traveling across the U.S., but I based in Washington DC. I will have to find work and a place to stay. I am looking for visa issues myself (I am a South African living in London). I would like your recommendations on the best ways to find work, what the employment situation is like right now and resorts that are quite safe and close public transport since I have no car. Are flat / house shares as common as they are in London? Moreover, what is the public transport system as there?
If you want to live close to public transport and you are not Filthy Rich, I would recommend living in the city itself, not in the suburbs. Most suburban communities near metro areas are very expensive to live (Grosvenor, Ballston Commons, Bethesda, Vienna) or not very pleasant places to live. Inside the city, you can find Nice enough affordable places to live near the Brookland / CUA stop, and some areas around the Georgia Ave / Petworth, Federal Center, Capitol South, Waterfront / SEU (do your homework on these areas carefully because there are certainly "good" blocks and "not good" blocks). Our bus is nowhere near world-class so you really want to be on a train or line on one of the "big" buses. Many bus lines stopped at 10pm or midnight. Wherever work is concerned … I suppose if you live in the United Kingdom and have a transplant then you have a marketable skill and not seeking a job entry level. DC itself has a high unemployment rate compared to the rest of the country, but most of unemployment for people unskilled or entry level, it is fairly easy to find white collar jobs here, especially if you have several years of experience behind you. If you're in IT Feilds or medical you'll have no problem. Post your resume on monster.com and you should get answers fairly quickly. Feel free to send an MP if you want more info!
