How much Should I Charge? Carpooling?

Okay so I live in an apartment with 4 other people, Two guys and two females in an three bedroom apartment. Every saturday of every week we all come home to our hometown which is about 50 miles away from where we all live (we’re college students)

I’m the one whose always driving them back since all of our parents want us to come home to visit them. I drive a honda pilot which get 20 mpg on the freeway, but since there’s heavy doses of traffic, i get only 16 mpg.

My parents have been yelling at me since i’ve only been charging them 1.50 each person per week. while my parents pay for the maintance and tires, etc on my pilot

should i charge my roommates more or at the current rate?

You should charge more because these trips are costing you more in gas then you are charging them. 50 miles away X 2 = 100 miles round trip. 100 miles / 16 mpg = 6.25 gallons of gas. 6.25 gas / 5 = 1.25 gals per person. 1.25 X $2.50 for gas = 3.125 per person. So it’s costing roughly $3 for gas each person just to make the round trip. I understand you’re going home anyways and they are your roommates but you should at least recoup your gas cost. I wouldn’t calculate maintenance or tires ( this is where the roommate gift factors in ) since you are going that way anyways and it gets more complicated trying to figure out those costs.
