Are the carpool lanes on I-405 in LA enforced 24 hours a day?
I know in other areas they are only enforced during rush hour times, but the carpool lane signs on I-405 don’t indicate any specific hours.
Yes, they are. If you are speeding and have the wrong color or type car, beware. ($287+) But the CHP does not want to do a five lane traffic break in the middle of the night to guide you over to the shoulder. There is talk of opening up the diamond lanes to everyone at certain times of the day. Realistically they should open it up to not just hybrids or motorcycles but small commercial vehicles under a certain weight )with commercial plates..(Pick ups, Vans, etc) just to narrow down a group of vehicles who could use it. Until the time when Sacramento bureaucracy and State funds meet up to make the most use of the HOV lanes, it has to be this way. Some cities (like Seattle) switch the diamond lane from one direction to the opposite way depending on traffic flow. Cal Trans cannot fathom this yet. Pillars for the overhead bridges make this difficult in places. One HOV transition road was condemned before it was even opened.
