Can I still feel apart of college even though I’ll be a commuter student?
I’m going to be a commuter student and so I won’t live on campus when I got a university next fall…
Can I still feel apart of my class? Doesn’t it even matter?
From my experience, I’d say it depends primarily on two factors:
–your desire to be a part of the campus community
–the distance that you live from campus
If you really want to be involved with your classes and with campus life, you’ll find a way. That being said, it’s a lot more difficult to be and stay involved on campus if you’re commuting from a considerable distance (especially if you don’t plan on traveling to campus every day).
I’ve lived on campus, near campus (less than 2 miles away), and now I commute from a neighboring town (about 50 miles away). I didn’t notice much difference regarding my campus involvement when I was on or near campus, but I’m considerably less involved with campus life now that I’m so far away.
If you want to be a part of campus life, involve yourself. Play intramural sports, join clubs or organizations, maybe even get a meal plan (or some sort of dining dollars or commuter plan) so you can eat in the cafeteria with students who live on campus. Though living off-campus may make being involved a little more difficult, it certainly doesn’t make it impossible!
