
Tonbridge – Kent – is an historic town with a rich heritage and culture. The town sits of the majestic Rive Medway and above which stands the well preserved thirteenth century castle. This magnificent architectural delight hosts many events during the summer months and is the perfect setting for a picnic.
Throughout the town you can still see many old timber framed buildings as well as unique tiled houses dating from the eighteenth century. Tonbridge was first given the status as a market town back in the year 1259 by the Earl of Gloucester and today there is still a well attended market selling varied items every Saturday throughout the year. There is also a fascinating flea market held on Fridays at the Angel Leisure Centre.
For those of you that enjoy outdoor activities you will be spoilt for choice in and around Tonbridge. There are many lakes and rivers to enjoy walking along or even fishing. In the summer you can take a boat ride in Haysden Country Park or explore its beautiful grounds that stretch for 160 acres.
If you prefer something more strenuous then you can have a few games of tennis on the four grass and four hard courts that are open to the public. There is also an eighteen hole golf course that is used by both amateurs and professionals and a crazy golf course for the kids.
The town is growing rapidly and currently has a population of 30,000. This is largely down to its location just twenty five miles to the south east of London making it an ideal commuter location. There are excellent transport links to the capital and further afield. The latest data show that Tonbridge railway station handles more than three and a half million passengers a year making it one of the busiest in the south east of the country. There are also easy to use road connections leading to both London and Brighton.
