Is it feasible to commute to Princeton from Philadelphia?
I currently live in the Midwest and don’t know the area at all. I have a friend that is moving to Philly and I thought it would be convenient to move in with him until I get on my feet while I attend Princeton.
It’s about an hour drive.
I’ve found it’s surprisingly difficult on the train. Amtrak doesn’t stop in Princeton, it stops a little out of town at something called Princeton Junction, and only a few of the trains stop there. Then you have to pay an extra fare for a shuttle (I think it’s called “the dingy”) to Princeton, which does put you right in the middle of the Princeton U campus. And those shuttles don’t run very often.
If you’re willing to pay for a cab once you get to Princeton Junction, it’s only about a 10 minute drive. And I suspect only about a half hour walk.
As an alternate, after my train escapade I did do a little investigating with New Jersey Transit, and they do seem to have some buses that run from Trenton train station to downtown Princeton. Those seem to be cheaper, more frequent and quicker than doing it on the train & dingy. Trenton is very easy to reach from Philly, on either Amtrak or the SEPTA R7 train. If I ever have occasion to try to get to Princeton again on public transport, I’m going to try the bus. But since I haven’t actually done this, I can’t tell you what bus or how well it really works.
