commute to washington dc
What time does rush-hour peak in the Washington DC, NOVA beltway?

I will be commuting from Woodbridge, VA to Herndon, VA and need suggestions for the best times to travel. My hours will be from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

Like the previous writers….I would NOT want to feel your pain…that is indeed a commute from hell!

The ‘peak’ on the beltway begins at 3:00 and ends around 7:00.

I lived in Springfield and would commute to Herndon using alternating routes depending on the radio reports. Mostly I took the FFX Cty Parkway, which was “reliable”. Further, it bypassed the beltway which chokes up still at Braddock all the way to Tysons…Not the way to go if you like hurry up and stop. Drivers on the beltway are NOT courteous and your stresses are folks riding your a@@ and cutting you off. I found taking the back roads was much more relaxing. My commute still took me an hour leaving at 7am and getting to the office at 8.

My recommendation is for you to come up from 123 to the FFX Pkway (2700) and get to Herndon that way or go south to 28 to head north…there is no resistance on Rt 66.

Getting to work will be much easier than getting home. On that account you are on your own. I noted that google maps gives you a 34 mile route taking back roads, while highway route is 43 miles. A significant savings.

Recommend a workout solution where you can go earlier and leave earlier. It might save your sanity.

Good luck. Link provided below.
