commute trip reduction

Considering a VW Polo for your next car purchase but unsure of what to go for? We’ve written you a quick round-up to show you the pros and cons of the models available on both the used and new car market.

The VW Polo has been a staple of the supermini market since its first release in the 1970s. However, it was the 2002 model that launched the iconic car we all know and love today. And it really is a well-loved car, with over 11 million people buying into it in its 34 year history – and that’s excluding second-hand sales!

If it’s a basic model for zipping about town that you’re after, a simple 1.2 litre E type will do the trick. Most reviews will tell you to avoid the E models where possibly, though I personally think that for a once weekly trip down the post office via Tescos they’re perfectly adequate. But for any more strenuous driving – for whipping the kids to nursery and football while running your errands and doing the weekly shop, or for the daily traffic-heavy commute the S model, Moda or BlueMotion might be safer bets.

The S model is a fairly standard package, offering a choice of engine sizes (go for 1.4 – the perfect compromise!), ABS and hydraulic brake assist, power-steering, and driver, front passenger and side airbags for peace of mind. Security-wise, the electronic engine immobiliser is standard, and for comfort the driver’s seat is fully adjustable. The rear seats are equipped with two Isofix child seat anchor points, further highlighting the car’s potential as a family drive.

The Polo S comes with electric front windows and a CD player, but if you want electric rear windows you’ll need to upgrade to the Moda model – which also comes with an MP3 compatible stereo system and alloys. The Moda is the ideal model for the lad about town, perfect for hooking up the ipod, rolling down the windows and cruising the streets.

If you spend a lot of time on the road, commuting to and from important business meetings, air-con is likely to be a necessity. If so so check out the Moda A/C and maybe consider the 1.4 eight valve, which demonstrates decent pull in lower gears and is ideal for stop-start traffic. Of course, if you’re looking for speed on the open road you’ll have to step the engine up a notch, as the 1.4 struggles with speed reduction over 60mph, making over-taking something of a trial. And if environment is as important to you as operations check out the SE and SEL models for upgraded upholstery and trim.

The BlueMotion, meanwhile, is the economically and ecologically leading Polo, cutting emissions to 99g/km and therefore placing the car safely in road tax free band A. Not only does this model save the planet, it saves you money, with up to 20% improved fuel efficiency.

So there you have it, a quick round-up of some of the best bargains out there. The VW Polo is a great financial investment and a pleasant drive. What more could you ask for?
