Scooter vs Bicycle accident stats?
I recently purchased a 70cc scooter with a top speed of ~45. i am going to use it for commuting on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph. i’ve been a bicycle commuter and avid rider for about 7 years and ride many miles everyday. My mom is worried I’m going to die on the scooter, but I think it would be safer than my bike. I don’t wear a helmet on my bike, but would on the scooter for legal reasons. I was wondeirng if there is a place for accident statistics comparing scooters/mopeds vs. bicycles ON THE ROAD. ~60% of bike accidents are when the bike was on teh sidewalk, so i want that part ot be thrown out of the reasoning. Anyone know a site or have this info?
I think it would be hard to get is information for several reasons.
For a start most statistics offices would gather information about accidents and fatalities for each road vehicle, but not necessarily where they were when the accident occured (saying whether it is on a road or not might sound simple, but when if they included that thye would have to say the type of road, etcand most of the time that is not relevant)
Also, it is hard to get information for scotters as they tend to get clumped together with motorbikes with much higher capacity engines.
Logically the scotter will be safer as when you are on the road you will be driving at the same speed as the rest of the traffic and therefore are not going to be overtaken by some idiot in a SUV who is in a rush and is not prepared to wait until there is a proper chance to overtake safely.
I would suggest though that you get the all the protective gear through (jacket, gloves and trousers) because I came off my bike at about 30mph and if I hadn’t be wearing them it would have hurt badly. buying and wearing those might appease your mother.
