Public transportation, might it be the answer for?

! Globabl warming,
2 long commutes with extreme traffic jams,
3 less worry about rise in oil prices
Coming from Europe where trams, trains and busses are much more popular I often wander why this possibility is not brought up more often to solve these issues. My (american) husband says it’s because Americans are addicted to their vehicles, but I tend to differ. If the American people would see the many benefits, especcially in their pocket books, they might be willing to give it a try.
Yes it would cost a lot of time and money, but the way we are going now, we are heading to total gridlock, with more and more cars being added to the roads every year.
Just wandering what the average American thinks about this

Public transportation here is terrible. I work 35 minutes on a good day from my job and there isn’t public transportation from my area to the area I work. I put $20 dollars a week in my gas tank for to and from work and if I could take the bus one way, it would cost me $1 each way if I only had to take one bus. But that wouldn’t happen either. I would have to keep switching buses and it would be more time consuming and just as costly. It just doesn’t work here unless to work downtown and can take one bus to and from so you don’t have to pay for parking.
