Do graduate students at Oxford ever live in London?
My partner has been accepted to undertake his PhD at Oxford. We will be relocating from Australia and there seems to be more opportunities career-wise for me in London.
PhD students in Australia don’t need to spend too much time on campus. If this is similar in the UK, then it seems he could commute from London a few times a week, however we can’t find any information about students actually doing this.
I could commute from Oxford to London, but given I’ll be travelling at peak times 5 days a week, it seems it would make more sense for him to be the one to commute.
Has anyone done this?
The money that you are going to spend on such travelling will become substantial over time. I suggest perhaps an actual re-locate to Oxford itself. There are houses for postgrads and various help the particular college can offer. Your partner himself will more than likely be offered if needed lodgings but obviously there is you to take into consideration as well.
Oxford is a buoyant city many opportunities in every sector. Non Employment within the city is hard as there is so many great companies and jobs, it all depends on what you want to do and are qualified for. Once in Oxford you could always apply to work in London and i know many of the big companies will pay for travel expense for worthy people.
Travel from London – Oxford and vice versa: 54 miles.
train around £20 return — 1 hour +
Buses around £13+ return — 1 hour to 1 hour 30
Car — 40mins +
You can of course get discounts, offers, bulk buy prices.
Again i would get your partner to speak with the actual college of choice and see his soon to be department for advice on anything.
