How can I claim vehicle expenses as part of my itemized deductions?
I had enough in deductions that I was able to itemize. I noticed that using the tax software I have, it asks me about vehicle expenses and commuting to work. My wife and I each put about 20k miles a year on our vehicles, most of which is commuting to work. What exactly can I claim?
You can’t claim any of the miles used for personal reasons, or any of the commuting miles. Driving from home to work is not an allowable deduction. If you have 2 jobs, and drive from home to job 1 then from job 1 to job 2, then the miles between jobs are deductible.
