What sort of condition/symptoms will result of bed rest or disability leave?
I am 28 weeks pregnant with baby #2. So far the pregnancy has been uneventful, but over the last 3 weeks, I’ve been having a really difficult time – head aches and crippling back pain that is relieved only when I lie down in a particular position. My commute to work is over an hour on a crowded subway, which has lately become completely impossible. I am wondering whether this is something that I should bring up to my doctor? Does this warrant bed rest or early leave/disability, or are these just common pregnancy symptoms and I should deal? (By the way, I didn’t have any such problems with my first pregnancy two years ago). Thanks!
Mention the back pain and headaches to your doctor, those need to be investigated further to see if there isn’t something more serious causing it. It depends on how generous he/she is with writing orders for bedrest.
But in most cases, to be ordered off work, there usually needs to be something serious going on, like preterm labor, bleeding, pregnancy induced hypertension, etc. The common aches and pains and tiredness of pregnancy do not warrant ordered medical leave.
Can you request to voluntarily reduce your hours/days at work?
