connecticut commuter bus
How can I get from New York to Providence without Amtrak or Greyhound?

I would like to go visit a friend in Providence next weekend. Amtrak is over $150 round trip and Greyhound stops too many times (and their buses are always smelly..)

I know that I can take Chinatown buses to Boston and then get to providence, but that seems to be overshooting the mark. Is anyone familiar with Metro North and the various mass transit commuter lines in Connecticut and Rhode Island? I think there has to be a way to do it by taking all commuter trains, but I need some advice.

By train, Amtrak reaches New Haven, and Shoreline East runs east from there… but not all the way to Providence.

By bus, Peter Pan goes to Providence; Bonanza might also. They might stop as often as Greyhound, though.
