Tax question. Can I deduct mileage?…?
If I live 5 hours away from my fulltime job and I have to commute to work Monday thru Friday. My question is… Come tax time… Can I deduct travel expenses and/or mileage for travel? I was going to relocate but after the economic crisis… I wasn’t able to sell my home and could not relocate and I can’t find a good paying job in my home town either. So now I’m stuck with traveling every weekend driving back and forth every week… 300 miles one way and 300 miles to go back home.
any tax tips will help. Thanks!
If this was a temporary assignment away from your home then you’d be able to deduct travel, meals, and lodging costs. However to be considered temporary it must:
a. Be reasonably expected to last less than one year AND
b. Actually last less than one year.
This does not appear to be the case, so it’s just a very long commute and isn’t deductible. Actually, as far as the IRS is concerned it’s not even a commute since your tax home is where you return the majority of time at the end of your work day so that’s the distant city in your case.
