Turn my Free Agent Maverick AL into a Flatland Bike?
I have this bike:http://www.freeagentbmx.com/06-maverick_al-07.htm
It is stock and I was wondering if anyone knew enough about upgrading bikes and flatland/street/trick riding to advise me. I would like to swap out some parts (brakes, tires, hubs, rims, crank etc) and turn this bike into a tough and reliable bike for street/trick riding. I have ridden it pretty hard and something recently broke, the pedals turn but do not catch so the tires do not actually spin by pedaling, the pedals just spin freely. I am not sure what i broke but I just want to do a complete upgrade on this bike, but i do not want to spend too much money. So if anyone is willing to assist me i would greatly appreciate it. I just have a little trouble figuring out which parts are good, and will swap to fit. Thank you, and i look forward to seeing where this gets me
First up, mate, you need to specify exactly what style of BMX you want to ride. The question title says you want to turn it into a Flatland bike… but then you want it to be a Flat/Street bike. Both styles have completely different bike set-ups, so it’s hard to have one bike for both.
Your hub is probably shot, that’s why the cranks aren’t catching.
To upgrade your parts, you will need to spend a few hundred dollars. Parts aren’t cheap, these days.
A Flatland bike will have these qualitys, incase you wanna make ur current bike into a Flatland bike.
– Tall seat post (330mm)
– Short cranks (150-160mm)
– Short-reach stem (26-35mm)
– High PSI tyres (100psi)
– Small sprocket (23-25t)
– Light parts (plastic pedals, light crankset)
– 4 pegs.
Flatland frames are generally no linger than 19.5″ top tubes. Yours is probably around the 21″ mark. THat wont matter TOO much, but you’d find Flatland easier on a smaller frame.
Check out this site for everything to do with Flatland bikes and parts… http://flatlandfuel.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=2 It’ll give you an idea on what to expect if you want to upgrade.
Your bike is a street bike, so if you just wanna ride street, get the hub fixed. It’s either your hub, or your bottom bracket.
