How does postmark work?
I have something I need to mail in for a contest, and it has to be postmarked by Jan. 7.
1. What’s the latest I can drop in into a mailbox and still expect it to have that date? Would any point before collection time on Jan. 7 be okay?
2. What’s the latest for a post office? Any time before closing Jan. 7, or what?
3. Which is preferable: post office or mailbox?
BTW, I live in Queens, New York and commute to Manhattan, if that makes a difference.
If the date is really important, I would walk it into the post office and wait while they stamp it for you! My post office loses things all of the time. I once went in to check on a delivery receipt with tracking and while one person was looking it up, another guy came out of the back and said “Oh look what I just found under a pile of stuff!” and sure enough, there was the letter I was tracking that should have been received two weeks before. Make them do their job! Good Luck!
