Is it possible to do a “green” roadtrip?

My green credentials were recently called into question because of a blurb in my Yahoo bio saying I loved roadtrips. What I meant was that I travel to places like Kings Canyon National Park, Death Valley, northern California redwood grooves, Anza -Borrego State Park — places where you can’t take the train, or a bus unless you’re on a group tour — and if you’ve ever travelled on a bus you know they’re not “green!” — and hitchhiking is illegal and would be cumbersome with all my gear. Sometimes a friend or two comes along, and of course we carpool!

Rather than add to the bio, I deleted the reference, but I love to visit our wildlands and yet I do want to be green in doing so. My car gets above-average gas milage, I don’t take lots of side trips, and once I get there I’m using my own two feet to get around.

But is there anything else I can do to make my road trips “green?”

Nope, I can’t think of any, you pretty much have it covered.

Amy, did the person who questioned your green credentials really know much about you or were they making assumptions about your lifestyle? Only you know how ‘green’ your lifestyle is, my guess is that all of the other things you do way offsets a few road trips. Nobody is perfect Amy, we can do our best. That best changes throughout our life, it is not up to others to judge you, it is only up to you.

I had my ‘green credentials’ challenged too, you will usually find that in reality the challenger lives a lot, lot, less green lifestyle than you do. However, challenges such as these do have positive effects too, I questioned what I was doing, like you are doing now, and made changes for the better, I am Vegan, again.

Step back Amy, look at your life as a whole, I reckon you will find you are pretty green already. Then do anything you can to offset your trips or make them greener, as you are doing, and go off on your trips guilt free. Just enjoy them.
