MBTA Transportation – Boston, MA?

I am planning on traveling to the Boston, MA area with my fiance in mid December. I am totally confused on how the MBTA transportation line works.

We are planning on staying in Rockport, MA and commuting to different cities daily to explore such as Salem & Boston. It says we can travel on the Commuter Rail to all of these places but I am not sure which tickets to buy??

I am confused between Interzone and Zone fares and which ones we should purchase?

It says Rockport is in Zone 8, Salem in Zone 3, and Boston (North Station) in Zone 1A

Can someone please help!!

It’s not that complicated, just bring cash and get on the train. When the conductor comes around, you can buy one from him. You don’t even need to know the zones, just tell him what city you’re going to.

If you’re only going to one city and then returning to Rockport, ask for a roundtrip ticket and don’t forget to hold onto it for your return trip.

A lot of the stations don’t even have a place where you can buy tickets, so there’s no surcharge for buying them on board. The only place where it’ll probably matter is North Station, where you can buy a one-way ticket to whatever zone from the machines there.

If you’ll have a car, I would suggest driving to Salem. It’ll be very cold in December and with 2 people, parking in Salem isn’t going to be much more difficult or expensive than taking the train.
