public transportation hawaii
Traveling to Hawaii in March?

I am looking to travel to Hawaii in March of 2010 – seems like so far away, but I think it’ll be here before I know it! Can anyone give me pointers, places of interest to visit, beaches to see, etc? I will be meeting someone there for a few days, then spending a few days by myself… Not sure yet where I’ll stay, but probably along Honolulu or Waikiki Beach.

Also, how’s the weather that time of year? Is it warm enough to get into the water and lay out on the beach?

Transportation… should I count on renting a car or is public transportation sufficient?

How much money should I bring with me? I figured the cost of the plane ticket and hotel to be around $1200-1600, but beyond that I’m not sure.

Any information would be great! I’m in the beginning stages of planning this, so I’m open to everything!

if you go this route, you can get by on $100.00 a day…….okay, heres the deal…..when you first arrive on Oahu (Honolulu) rent a car, drive all over the island, go to the luaus yourself and discover the beaches yourself. try to stay away from Waikiki, its a tourist trap and you wont see the real beauty of hawaii in that city. drive to the north shore of Oahu,,,,Haleiwa, Mokuliea, Pupukea, Haunama bay, etc….only one road around the island that is Kamehameha highway. stop in Laie to eat at the shrimp farms, just cruise. you came to hawaii for the beauty, NOT the tourists trap. Pearl Harbor in Aiea is free. Historic and important. you dont need to see other tourists to enjoy hawaii….the beauty of hawaii is a hidden beach that you may find yourself in, swim in the salty big blue ocean. go eat Shave Ice in Matsumotos in Haleiwa. Go east to Waimea Bay to see the beautiful bay, keep driving and youll soon be in Pupukea or Sharks Cove, wade in the waters there….nice. bring tons of sunblock and few clothes. even the water is still warm in January, although big waves on North Shore, even “Eddie Aikau” 50 foot waves if youre lucky. South Shore or the Waikiki area is low waves that time of year. Crowded with stores that you can find in Vegas or the mainland. You come to Hawaii to see the land and spend time in the sea, Waikiki is too crowded for that. Go to the Dole Pineapple plantation for pineapple ice cream in Wahiawa. thats central Oahu on the way back to waikiki. if you go from the airport to the North SHore, in Pupukea, there is a FoodLand there, you can find all kinds of ads for room rentals in that area. thats the Hawaii you want to see. buy fruit from the vendors on the side of the road. enjoy yourself. dont be afraid, you wont get lost in a car,,,,,you are driving in a circle! now go and have fun! dont ride in buses, rent a car! Luaus: Jermaines or Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie…do it on your own, youll save tons of money and a better time! the beauty is the land and the sea, dont buy into the false smiles and grins of the locals in the shops, they really hate what they are doing, but have no choice. to them you are just a Haole with money to burn. hawaii, a great place to visit but hostile to people who move there.
