public transportation houston tx
How about public transportation in Houston, TX?

I will graduate from college in December, decide to move there. New York is very convenient, but the rent is so high. Is the public transportation convenient in that city? Is it convenient to take a bus or subway from sugarland to chinatown? I like chinese food, but I don’t have a car.

Thanks.

Sugar Land to either Chinatown are only accessible by car. We have no subway here, the toy train (light rail) was only put in to try and get us the 2008 Olympics, and our bus system does not go to Fort Bend County (Sugar Land is in Fort Bend).

Yes, we do have two different Chinatown areas. One is just south of downtown and the other one runs along Bellaire Boulevard west of Beltway 8.

As for liking Chinese food, we have several HUNDRED Chinese restaurants in Houston, and there may be one in your neighborhood. Houston, unlike Manhattan, is very spread out, and people FROM everywhere LIVE everywhere. There’s a nice family from Hong Kong two doors down from me. I doubt they’d drive ten miles (or 20 if you’re going downtown) for Chinese food, any more than I would.

Read up on Houston before you come here. I love this town, but it isn’t for everyone. Many Yankees (and yes, you’ll be called one) come here with the attitude of, “Back home we…” Sorry, but Houston isn’t going to change. This is coming from a former Yankee who has lived in Texas for most of 33 years (aside from a year of college and some time spent in the Navy).

Get a car. They aren’t expensive. It’ll pay for itself.

You can live here quite comfortably for a fraction of what you’d pay for Manhattan, or even Brooklyn. Amenities are cheaper, food is even cheaper, fuel is cheaper, and we have no state income tax.

Here’s some info about Houston that might help.
