public transportation key west
Best & cheap transportation in Key West?

Myself and 3 friends (4 total) are going to Key West for Spring Break. We are staying at the Days Inn on N. Roosevelt and understand it’s a good distance (like 5+ miles) to Duval St…the heart of Key West. What types of public transportation can we get? We are not renting a car. Are there buses that run often and cheap? How are the taxis down there?

Thanks!

The buses here in Key West will cost you $2 for a one way trip. If you are a student and under 21 you can show ID and your fare one way will be 50 cents. Generally the buses run about once an hour, but they stop running at about midnight, so you would need a cab to get back to your hotel from Duval if you are out late, which I assume you would be. Count on about $20 – $25 for that cab ride. Your hotel will probably have copies of the bus schedule, and I’ve included a link that will show you the routes.

It isn’t 5 miles to Duval – Key West is only 4 miles long and 2 miles wide – so it is a bit of a hike from Days Inn, but not 5 miles. Many visitors here rent scooters or bicycles, but that will be expensive. I’ve often walked from that area to downtown, so it is possible to do that, but probably not what you would want to do.

I think the Old Town Trolley stops at, or near, your hotel. It does cost $30 for a one day pass, but you can get on and off all day at any one of about 12 or 13 stops, and you’d learn a lot about our island, and might also learn about some interesting things to do other than Duval Street.

enjoy Key West.
