San Diego is one of the most hospitable cities in the country. With perfect weather year round, beaches, boat tours, one of the most popular amusement parks in the U.S. and tons of other things to do, San Diego can be a great place to spend a vacation. Here are some travel tips that will help make your stay even better.
Getting There
Whether you’re getting here by plane, bus or train, make sure to keep your tickets on you at all times. If you’re traveling by car, remember that cell-phone use while driving is illegal in California. Make sure to make photocopies of all your credit cards and important documentation before you leave home. Keep a copy of these at your hotel when you arrive in San Diego.
Accommodations
Make sure to book a room at least a week or two in advanced before traveling to San Diego, especially if you’re visiting during holiday or convention seasons. Rooms in Downtown San Diego can go fast, and if you wait until the last minute to book them, it can be considerably more expensive. It might be a good idea also to book a room that’s not in the main Downtown area, but a few minutes away. It’s cheaper and you only need to take a short bus or trolley ride to get to the main attractions.
Transportation
Using the public transit system in San Diego can be a lot of fun. You can usually find trolley and bus schedules at the front desk of whatever hotel or inn you’re staying at. You can also check routes and times online at the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s website. Remember to bring exact change for public transportation, and if you take a taxi, make sure that the driver starts the meter, as you should never have to pay more than the meter amount. If you’re driving, be aware of the one-way streets and the time-limit on the meter parking spots in the Downtown area. Parking can be very tough, especially on weekends. It might be a better idea to take a taxi or public transportation and just leave the car at the hotel lot.
Visiting the Beach
Beaches are one of the main attractions that bring visitors to San Diego. Which ever beach you go to, make sure to know where the nearest life-guard tower is and check posted signs for any restrictions. Some beaches don’t allow glass containers on the beach for example, and there are a few non-swimming areas, such as the Seal Beach in La Jolla. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the beaches as of 2008. If you want to enjoy a cold beer or a nice cocktail drink, there are plenty of beach side restaurants and bars you can walk to.
