reverse commute dc
Considering moving to Suitland, MD…how safe is this area for a single female?

I have taken a job in Dahlgren, VA but want to live in DC (reverse commute). I found a townhome in Suitland that was pretty new and very close to the Branch metro (and reasonably priced…<300,000---which concerns me); however, I do not want to be living in a dangerous area since I am new, unfamiliar with DC and single. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi-I live in Riverdale, MD which is in between New Carollton, Hyattsville and further up, Greenbelt. I personally do not like Suitland, MD. Please consider staying in VA. Besides, Dahlgren is a far drive or commute from Suitland. I would not want to move there, even with all of the remodeling and putting in new stores, condos, etc. The DC area is a very tricky area to find a place to live. I have struggled with this for many years, and I have come to the conclusion that this is my last stop. Have you consulted a realtor? Check out the crime stats for Suitland vs. Dahlgren area on yahoo. The only issue I have with VA is the taxes you pay for your property. Check with a realtor for a forecast for the Suitland area, i.e., will it get better in terms of buying, etc. I am sorry to sound too motherly (I am 33 btw) but the fact that you are a single woman frightens me. I am a single African-American women with two boys, and I did not choose to live there. If you can, look into Silver Spring or NW DC, Rockville. Go to the Montgomery County website for housing programs or assistance with buying a home in that area. It is sad, but it is just not a good area. Please keep me posted…
