scooter commuting
Shall I get a 50cc or 125cc scooter for commuting within greater and central london?

I have just completed my basic motorbike training day. It took me two attempts and I was using a 50cc moped. I have now brought a 125cc scooter from a friend. It’s a nice bike but really rather heavy (i’m a woman) and I’m quite nervous of just how fast it can go. Would you recommend that I stick with the 125cc or change my mind and choose a 50cc one instead? I’m in a bit of a dillema because I don’t want to annoy my friend or mess him around.
EDIT: Might there be 125cc scooters recommended for women? And if so, does anyone know any models?

Don’t worry about messing your friend around. The important thing is that you are comfortable with the machine you are riding. If you find your friends bike too heavy tell him. He’d rather know now rather than after you have dropped it or had an accident.

I would recommend a 125 for your commute, most 50cc bikes just can’t keep up with the flow & you kind yourself having to ride in the gutter to avoid becoming a rolling roadblock!

A 125 scooter isn’t normally significantly heavier than its 50cc equivilant. There are plenty of small light 125’s available. The speed isn’t an issue, it only goes as fast as you tell it, you control it not the other way round!

edit; in answer to your second question about scooters for women, all scooters are designed to be unisex, there are some that appeal to ladies more than others, I’ve listed a few for you below. They are the less “aggressive ” or “sporty” designs & are the more compact machines often with slightly lower seat heights. I would recommend you go to a dealer or two & look at these machines before you consider buying. Many people feel uncomfortable going into bike stores as a new rider….DON’T!. You are the reason for their existance, use & abuse them, sit on all their bikes & ask as many questions as you want! That’s what they are there for! There’s no such thing as a stupid question!
