Why do some Republicans think Bill Clinton should have been punished for his actions, but not Scooter Libby?
Some Republicans feel that Bill Clinton should have served prison time for lying about his sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky. However, Scooter Libby aided in exposing the identity of an undercover CIA agent, yet some Republicans think that Scooter Libby’s punishment was too harsh. The SOB is lucky he was not charged with treason and given the death penalty. He gets a slap on the wrist (30 month prison sentence) for what he did and George W. Bush still commutes his sentence, allowing him to serve no prison time.
Do you see the problem with America? If someone burns a flag, white conservatives call it treason. But exposing the identity of an undercover agent is not considered treason if you are a Republican.
Your mistake here is thinking Republicans care about the law at all. They pick and choose when to be outraged. An example is immigration, when someone says its just some hard workin kid picking fruit, they say emphatically, “He broke the LAW!”, yet the battle cry of the NRA is “From my cold dead hands!” – implying they will violently oppose any ‘Law’ passed trying to ban guns.
Everything is self serving tactics, not genuine outrage or sympathy. Bush commuted Libby, but not pardoned him. This puts Libby in the position where he’s not facing jail – so he won’t agree to reduced jail time for testimony against others, which would expose crimes from higher ups. But he didn’t pardon him – thus keeping that as leverage and keeping him on a short leash (if he was Pardoned and free and clear, he might go for the Book deal).
