Where to stay when visiting New York?

My girlfriend and I will travel to New York for four days in August. I was wondering where would be the best place to sleep. We do not want to spend a fortune, about 150/night. Ideally do not share a bathroom and a place where I can park my car free. Thus it is best to stay on the island, or stay somewhere in New Jersey and take the train. Anyone who has done this kind of sharing the spirit journey where they stayed and advice?
