Are taxis safe for single women to drive themselves in big cities like Dallas?

I'm 19 and in using service taxi back to the house of my work takes me from my carpool in the morning only. I would be traveling in the early afternoon and around 9 pm, too late. Is it generally a safe thing to do? Is it safe for young women themselves to take a taxi? The journey is only a few miles from home. Thank you!
