How does the train ticket in Boston compared to NYC?

Ok, I am planning to go to Boston to visit friends and family. However, I have no car so I'm going to Boston by bus, then plan on transportation. Which is perfectly fine for me because I feel like its the best way to discover a city. But how are the prices? This is the main comparison I want to know between the two that city and New York. I been in other cities with rail systems and most of them have only one price you pay to go to and from your destination. Of course, there are packages for unlimited DC and washing etc but was different in that the subway you had to pay for the destination you want to go, not just pay a price and take the train anywhere you want. So my question is, Boston is like that too? Or that you only pay a price general boarding the train or bus? Thank you
