Can you legally drive in WA carpool lane without the # of required people in the car during congested traffic?
When traffic is very congested and all lanes are very slow or stopped due to an event such as road construction, accidents, etc. —is it legal for a car with a single occupant to use the car pool lanes in Washington state (specifically along I5 North and South) until the usual flow of traffic returns? Thank you for your help!
Driving in a carpool lane in Washington state without the necessary occupancy is a $450 – $1000 fine, depending who catches you and in what area you are in.
Regardless what anyone this site tells you, it is illegal. On the 520 bridge, where occupancy is 3 persons, there are frequent road blocks to catch violators. This is great revenue for the stste and local communities.
You can drive in carpool lanes alone, if you like, I see people do it all the time, however, the more you do it the likelier you are to get caught.
