Have you recently watched The Matrix? Remember the scene where Neo is offered the red pill or blue pill?
For those of you who are not fans of The Matrix, here's the synopsis. Computers have taken over the world and use humans as living batteries to power their lives. Computers found that people perish without a reason to live, so they plug the man in the womb, a computer simulation of everyday life in the late 1990s, with booths, Rush Hour, and the rat race forever.
The only problem with the matrix is that is a small percentage of people who feel in their hearts that this existence is a lie. Neo, the main character, is one of them, and starts check answers. The pivotal scene takes place. Neo must choose whether to take the blue pill and wake up in bed the next morning to continue blindly his life in the womb, or take the red pill and learn the truth.
My oldest son finished his junior year at school secondary, and he will soon face the same crucial choice. Life with the blue pill is very attractive. Find a good job, raise a family, live in the suburbs, work for 45 years, and a comfortable retirement. It can never be fabulously rich, but he would do well. Our education system is designed to molding our youth in this future. After all, we need good workers, right?
But what Matrix would he live in? Is it consistent voluntarily limits of artificial life in corporate America?
When I was in his shoes, I do not know there was other options. I continued the process of obtaining a good education as an engineer, get a good job, and … Surprise, surprise! Life was not easy. I could barely afford to buy a house in the suburbs, commuted an hour and a half in each direction at work, and never had time to spend with my children. I felt like the adults in my life I had been sold a lie.
I grew up in a small town Montana. My parents ran a gift shop and greenhouse, and had a small house on 40 acres of land just outside the city. They have struggled trying to earn a living in a small town, but I lived the ideal life of a boy … Fishing, hunting and outdoor.
My parents wanted more for me. I dutifully set for life in the big city, not because I had no desire to live, but because I had said that was what I should do. My parents have really felt it was the best way.
There are about ten years, I chose to take the red pill. I packed my family in a U-Haul, and moved across the state to define my own existence. I abandoned traveling and living in large cities for something else. Now I work from my home office and have the freedom to structure my life as I want to live. Instead of going to the highway, I spent this morning with my youngest son, who am Donuts with Dad at his elementary school. I went to every basketball games with my children, concert band, and track meets this year. I hunt and fish with my kids, and camp with the Scouts. Life is beautiful.
If there is one gift that I give to my son, this is the truth. It need not be contained by another Matrix. He did not need to conform to the ideal of another person how he should live his life. He can choose.
If you have a teenager, be sure to talk to him or her how they want to live their lives. Instead of asking them what they want to do, help them figure how they want to live.
Do they live in the city, country, or somewhere in between? Do they prefer an 8-to-5 job with weekends and holidays off, or do they want a little more flexibility? Are they willing to work for themselves, and may forego vacation and holidays for some time to have later? What kind of house do they live? What car do they want to drive?
Now, Once these questions are answered, what kind of income they need to create to live their lives how they want to live? What education do they have need to reach such a project? What skills do they need to learn? What contacts do they need to do?
Before your teenager dies the attraction of the blue pill, giving them a warning shot. The truth is that he or she has more opportunities and options ever before. They may have life of their dreams.
Do not get me wrong. Choose the red pill has its price. The blue pill down ever so much easier. After all, the blue pill is the normal trajectory. On the trail of Mindless masses is so obvious. A small part of me knows that life might be easier for my children if they know they have other options. Compliance could be rewarded by the comfort and ease.
But opportunities red pill …
