winter cycling commuting
Commuters: Fall/Winter Gear?

At what temperature do you normally start to shed the shorts and start wearing jeans, stocking caps, gloves, jacket or whatever?

The reason I’m asking is that winter time (Las Vegas winter) is starting up and tonight it’ll get around the low 50’s around 10pm when I get off duty. This is my first winter cycle-commuting and will be my first cold spell, so I’m trying to figure out how best to dress so that I’m not too cold nor will over heat.

It kind of depends on how far you intend to ride, if it’s anything over a few miles, i wouldn’t recommend jeans.

I’m just outside DC and my morning rides start out in the low 50’s right now. I use a pair of tights (long pants) – which are cheaper without the chamois (the padding in the butt), a pair of shorts (with the chamois pad) over those, a moisture absorbing short sleeve shirt, a regular summer weight jersey, arm warmers, no-finger gloves, and a bandanna under my helmet. a thin wind-stopper vest that you can roll up and stash in your jersey pockets might be good at the beginning of the ride. once you’ve been pedaling for awhile, you’ll warm up. the key is layers you can add/take off as needed. you don’t need anything too bulky.
