work commute
What is a reasonable commute time to work?

Also, if the company you work for asks you to extend your commute for their benefit, what is it fair to ask for in return?

I ask because my drive recently went from about 5 minutes each way to almost 2 hours roundtrip, because my company wanted me at a different location. I’m still doing the exact same job.

How far/long is your commute?

Check with the company’s Human Resources about the company policy for company-paid moves. If the drive is too far and they will not pay for the move, you may want to start looking for a new job. Just tough it out until you find a new job; don’t get mad and quit without a new job lined up.

Here are three questions to consider: Did the company say why you were moved? Were you doing a very good job so you were asked to move to “fix” the new location. Or were you doing such a poor job they wanted to move you such a distance that they hope you would quit?

I know that the Federal Government has programs to pay for moves if the job location is moved through no choice of the employee.

Personally, my commute is about 40 minutes and 17 miles.
